Momo’s Balance Beam Lab

Use multiplication to connect equal loads and distance from a pivot, and predict how a beam balances.

How to play

Explore six model beams with Momo. Every apricot bag has the same mass. Numbered steps are equal distances from the middle pivot. Compare bags × steps on each side; equal products balance. The beam is held level while you plan. In this simplified model, ignore the mass of the beam and trays; only the bags count. The central pivot turns freely. Choose an answer; hints are always here. This is a picture model, not an instruction to build or climb a real beam.

One bag 3 steps left balances three equal bags 1 step right: 1 × 3 = 3 × 1. When the turning effects differ, the side with the larger product goes down.
